Cassandra Dallett

Jane Doe

Across my lane
unbearably fast
slow motion hooves
barely touch
pavement impossible
tall flying through air
sunlight’s color
honeyed and rich
Pegasus minus the wings.
An unmarked van
moving as fast
for a splinter of time
I think maybe…

Then her body
in reverse
airborne
a chunk of pink
flesh follows
end over end
as I drive near
her body
comes to rest
beside me
on the yellow line
legs stiff
eyes bulge
she gasps
her last golden
piece of life.
